Roman gold pendant with agate cameo

A gold pendant with a scrolling foliate frame containing a cameo carved from grey and white banded agate. The cameo is carved with the profile head of an elegant lady with draped bust.

The back of the gold mount has two small loops at the top so that it could be worn on as a pendant.

Roman, c. 3rd Century AD

Deformation and small losses to the gold as seen in the images. There is a small residue of solder on the back, probably from re-use in a later piece of jewellery.

Size: 1.7 cms diameter
